January 28, 2016

We have no less ground to cover today but will cover it in a slightly more prioritized order.

#1 – please let Coach Al know if you can lead a pace group this Saturday!

#2 – for the past many years the ship has hung flyers on the doors of homes along the marathon route warning the inhabitants that they will be sequestered on marathon day.  This year is no exception.  I am in need of 4 (mega thanks to the 16 of you that have already stepped up) awesome and decisive volunteers to give up a few hours of their Saturday (February 6th) to knock out this labor of love for our hometown race.  Please click here, fill out the pertinent info, and show up on February 6th (not this Saturday but NEXT Saturday) ready to hang!  Besides the reward of giving back you will receive a volunteer t-shirt and FREE breakfast at Cafe Express.  Thanks much and, if at all possible, please volunteer by this Saturday, January 30th.

Run, eat, hang flyers!  We usually knock it out in 2 hours from 10 am to high noon.

#3 – every year I continue to be surprised by the speed at which the marathon party fills up.  I’ve never actually kept a record but this year might be it.  I have roughly a dozen person backlog of folks trying to get a spot.  Some I will force in because it just wouldn’t be a party (in my opinion) without them.  Here is my genuine and heartfelt plea to you if already RSVP’d with a +1.  If your +1 is a non-running spouse/significant other/out of town friend, etc… please consider dropping them off your RSVP.  This will potentially free up room for several shipmates.  Thank you!  If you’re waiting on a spot you should consider leading a pace group or handing me a hefty sum of cash for the Shipmate of the Year award.  If you already have a spot…that’s a good way to keep it!

#4 – Dr. Jonathan from Performance Wellness will be at Tuesday’s workout (the first Tuesday of February) to hammer out your taper aches/pains!

The Workout – 5 mile tempo

News – there will be a long run departing the zero at 7:00:00 am on Saturday morning.  On/off the trail this week for 12 miles (linked route but cut across to S 1st at Lightsey + the 7 mile loop on the trail), 13 miles (linked route + the 7 mile loop), or 20 miles (linked route + the 7 mile loop twice).  The 13 and 20 mile distances are for those on the marathon track.  Three week taper folks do 13, two week taper folks do 20.  The 12 miler is for those on the half marathon track.  Breakfast at El Gallo (bring on the little meats at 2910 S Congress) at 9:30:30 am.

Buckle up, we have a lot of ground to cover!

#1 – for the past many years the ship has hung flyers on the doors of homes along the marathon route warning the inhabitants that they will be sequestered on marathon day.  This year is no exception.  I am in need of 20 awesome and decisive volunteers to give up a few hours of their Saturday (February 6th) to knock out this labor of love for our hometown race.

#2 – the annual ship marathon party is in 2.5 weeks.  Among the many highlights of the evening is the annual awarding of Shipmate of the Year (SotY)!  It is customary that we collect huge sums of cash and award it to said shipmate as a token of our appreciation for a job well done.  Please feel free to slip Coach Al or myself whatever cash you’d like to contribute.  We will bundle it up and present it to the winner who will use it to pamper themselves with all manner of mani/pedi, running gear, meals out, exotic travel, and the like.  No contribution is too small or too large.

#3 – please let Coach Al know if you can lead a pace group this Saturday!

#4 – the annual ship marathon party is scheduled for Friday, February 12th.  I haven’t sent the invite yet but will very shortly.  The lasagna recipe has been perfected, the beer will be cold, and the company will be divine!  Check your inbox and RSVP quickly as attendance must be limited to 50 fools.

The Workout – 8 x 800

News – there will be a hill workout on Thursday (5 mile tempo).  There will be a long run departing the zero at 7:00:00 am on Saturday morning.

I believe that 3M on Sunday has zapped our most dependable pace group leaders from this weekend’s long run.  Unless we get a swell of last minute responses we will be going old school.  That being said, let me know if you can lead a pace group on Saturday!

Good luck to everyone running 3M on Sunday!!

The Workout – 7 mile tempo (linked route x 2)

News – there will be a long run departing the zero at 7:00:00 am Saturday morning.  Off the trail this week for 11.65 miles or 21.59 miles.  Breakfast at Cheko’s (1304 W Koenig) at the exact moment you arrive.

More News – As previously mentioned, the annual ship marathon party is coming up on Friday, February 12th (invitation and more info to follow).  There are a couple of new things on tap for this year.  (1)  Dick has an old tyvek jacket from the Dallas Marathon circa sometime in the 90s that he has painstakingly collected autographs on from famous and pseudo-famous runners.  The person who can identify the most autographees will win a $50 gift card to Luke’s Locker!  Thanks, Dick!!  Also, I have a pair of NormaTec recovery boots.  I’ll try to squeeze as many people into them for 20 minute sessions as I can.  These things are awesome!!

Save the date!  The annual Ship Marathon Party is scheduled for Friday, February 12th.  More info and an invitation to follow.

The Workout – 1k, 2k, 1k, 1k

News – there will be a hill workout on Thursday (5 mile tempo).  There will be a long run departing the zero on Saturday morning at 7:00:00 am.  Your schedule may call for a 20 miler but, due to the Rogue Distance Festival, that’s being adjusted (way to coach, Al!).  We’ll be doing 11 miles (linked route plus the 4 mile loop) or 14 miles (linked route plus the 7 mile loop).  There will be gatorade at Barton Hills/Wilke.  Breakfast at Hoover’s (2002 Manor) at 9:35:35 am.

p.s.  If you do not run the complete lollipop as mapped prior to running the 4 mile loop or 7 mile loop on the trail you will be short on distance by roughly 2 miles.  That may hurt the brain of you professorial and slide-rulian types.  Resist the urge to hang a left onto the Barton Springs footbridge before returning to the zero.
